The Build-a-Word worksheet has students practice phonics skills, spellling and reading. The template has an image for students to look at and 2 options for building each stage of the word. Students name the pictures and select the correct path to build the word. Then, there is a line that they can use to practice writing the word to solidify or self-check their answer.
Ideas for how to use this worksheet:
- It's important that students are familiar with the vocabulary, so I usually go over all of the words (images) verbally first. Do this several times if you need to.
- Students should name the word (again) and work on sounding out the word as they build it. They should say the sound for each 'building bubble' as they make their path and then read the word:
- When students are writing the word, they should say each letter's reading as they write and then when they have finished writing the word, read it one last time.
By reading or sounding out each letter as they build their word, students solidify the phonics rules and it also servers to decrease mistakes in their work (a self-check.)
